EU takes Pierre Nkurunziza at his word and calls for political arena to be opened up

11/06/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 8 June, the EU responded positively to the announcement made the previous day by Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza that he will not run for the elections in 2020.  The EU then immediately called for the political arena to be opened up.  "This announcement, in line with the principle of democratic change of government (...) is likely to alleviate the situation in Burundi", the spokesperson for the European External Action Service stated....
