Court to rule soon on whether Polish legal system meets criteria inherent to rule of law

On Friday 1 June, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) held a hearing on a case of particular significance for the fate of the rule of law procedure launched by the Commission against Poland at the end of 2017 (see EUROPE 11930).

The Court has been examining a case concerning the integrity of Polish judicial powers after a judge of the Irish High Court refused in March of this year to extradite Artur Celmer, a Polish national and suspect in a drugs case, to Poland, amid concerns...
