30/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 29 May, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service denounced the Syrian regime’s decision to establish diplomatic relations with the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The decision “violates international law and the principle of territorial integrity as defined by the United Nations Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions”. This will mean an exchange of ambassadors, among other things. The spokesperson reiterated the EU’s full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internally recognised borders. “We remain committed to actively support conflict resolution efforts, including through the work of the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, and the EU Monitoring Mission”, the spokesperson states in a press release.
