Donald Tusk criticises Trump administration's vagaries

On Wednesday 16 May, European Council President Donald Tusk attacked the US administration, describing it as "capricious".

"Besides traditional political challenges such as the rise of China, or the aggressive stance of Russia, we are witnessing today a new phenomenon: the capricious assertiveness of the American administration", Tusk said, ahead of the informal dinner for heads of state and government meeting in Sofia.  The leaders are expected to discuss the decision of US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal.  They are also expected to discuss Washington's trade policy and the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem, which has provoked renewed tension in the Middle East.

"Looking at the latest decisions of President Trump someone could even think: with friends like that who needs enemies?", Tusk said.   He stated ironically that Europe should be grateful to Trump "because thanks to him we have got rid of all illusions.  He has made us realise that if you need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of your arm", he said.

Tusk nevertheless said that Europe must "do everything in its power to protect, in spite of today’s mood, the transatlantic bond".  "But at the same time, we must be prepared for those scenarios, where we will have to act on our own", he warned.  (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
