15/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – In a press release on Tuesday 15 May, the NGO Amnesty International speaks out against the EU's policy that has recently led the Libyan authorities to intercept a growing number of migrants and refugees at sea and to increase the number of people placed in Libyan centres. Amnesty says the increase in the number of migrants and refugees intercepted at sea by the Libyan authorities has led to at least 2,600 people being transferred to dirty detention centres over the course of the last two months, where they are tortured and ransomed. The NGO accuses the European governments of being complicit in this abuse. At least 7,000 migrants and refugees (compared with 4,400 in March) are languishing in Libyan detention centres where abuse rages and where there is a shortage of food and water, Amnesty writes. (SP)
