03/05/2018 (Agence Europe) – The Belgian platform of NGOs within the CNCD-11.11.11 group launched a campaign on Thursday 3 May to obtain signatures in support of the European Citizens' Initiative on taking in migrants and preventing the criminalisation of solidarity. If the ECI obtains 1 million signatures throughout Europe, this petition will compel the European Commission to take a position on the subject. More than 130 European organisations coordinated by the Migration Policy Group (MGP) supported this approach, which calls on the Commission “to legislate in favour of a more humane migration policy”. The ECI explains that “Today, in Europe, thousands of citizens showing solidarity are at risk of being fined or imprisoned because they are helping those who are fleeing all kinds of violence. This is not the kind of Europe we want!”. (SP)
