Hearing in early May of respective arguments on territorial conflict

10/04/2018 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 10 April, the European Commission confirmed that it had proposed in a letter the holding of a hearing on 2 May on the respective arguments of Croatia and Slovenia as regards the border conflict that has pitted them against each other for decades and for which international arbitration has ruled in Slovenia's favour – although Croatia does not respect this.  The international permanent arbitration court in The Hague indeed attributed more than two thirds of Piran Bay to Slovenia last June, with the aim of putting an end to this dispute that dates back to the break-up of Yugoslavia.   This hearing is taking place in the framework of Article 259 of the Treaty, which Slovenia has decided to use to ask the Commission to intervene between the two parties before an appeal to the Court of Justice (see EUROPE 11983).  (SP)
