On Monday 9 April, MEP Paul Tang (S&D, Netherlands) addressed the conference on modern taxation systems hosted by the S&D group at the European Parliament and the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), also in partnership with the Maison Syndicale Internationale, on the subject of the taxation of the member states.
He said that a handful of countries steal tax base from other member states “and we are supposed to be European partners”. “We need more evidence so we can show how much Ireland and so on are stealing from Germany and France”, he added, recommending that the matter should be “tied up with the forthcoming multiannual financial framework”.
On behalf of the NGO Eurodad, Tove Maria Ryding said that the most progressive European countries in taxation matters should seek to form alliances outside the EU. Prem Sikka of the University of Sheffield and adviser to the Tax Justice Network called for deductions on intra-group transactions to be quite simply abolished.
