EU hails smooth conduct of second round of presidential election

03/04/2018 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 3 April, the European Union hailed the smooth conduct of the second round of presidential elections in Sierra Leone on 31 March, while calling for "the peaceful conclusion of the electoral process", as the counting of votes is still ongoing to decide between Dr Samura Kamara, the candidate of the All People's Congress (APC), and his opponent, Julius Maada Bio.  In a press release, the European External Action Service (EEAS) spokesperson hails "the large and peaceful participation" in the vote, and "the professionalism of the Sierra Leonean National Electoral Commission".  The EU's election observation mission, led by Jean Lambert MEP (Greens/EFA, UK), will write its final report and recommendations in the next two months (see EUROPE 11957).  Lambert took part in the presentation of the preliminary communication of the ECOWAS observers on 3 April.  (AN)
