03/04/2018 (Agence Europe) – At the end of his mandate in late November 2019, European Council President Donald Tusk will continue his political career fighting the Law and Justice (PiS) party that is currently in power in Poland. "I'm not going to retire", he said on Polish television channel TVN24 on Friday 30 March, promising to criticise any attack on the rule of law for which PiS is responsible (see EUROPE 11988, 11986). He said he hoped that "Poles who dream about stable democracy and the rule of law will be able to win future elections" in autumn 2019. As negotiations on the post-2020 multi-annual financial framework begin, the former Polish prime minister from the Civic Platform party warned against "permanent" solutions that would limit European funding to countries infringing the rule of law. "I wish Poland didn’t lose a single eurocent for this reason", he said. (MB)
