22/02/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 22 February, the European Commission approved a French measure to support electricity generation by biomass. This will take the form of calls for tenders for the construction and exploitation of 180 megawatt installations for biomass electricity generation. These will be high output cogeneration plants. A premium added to the market price at which producers sell their electricity will then be granted to those entities having carried the call for tenders. Considering that the measure would help France increase its electricity production from stable renewable energy sources, without causing significant competition distortion on the electricity market, the Commission concluded the scheme was compatible with state aid rules under EU law.
