Annual inflation rate down to 1.4% in eurozone in October

The annual inflation rate stood at 1.4% and 1.7% respectively in the Eurozone and in the EU in October, which represents a drop of 0.1% compared to September (1.5% and 1.8%), according to an assessment by the statistical office of the European Union (Eurostat) published on Thursday 16 November.

However, this rate is considerably higher than the one observed in October 2016, when it stood at 0.5% for both the Eurozone and the EU.

Compared to September of this year, the annual inflation rate is down in 14 member states, whilst nine others, including Portugal, France and Romania, have seen an increase in their annual inflation.

This value nonetheless hides disparities between member states, with Lithuania (4.2%), Estonia (4.0%) and the United Kingdom (3.0%) seeing annual inflation rates considerably higher than those of Cyprus (0.4%) and Finland, Greece and Ireland (0.5% each).

The highest annual inflation rates in October related to energy (3.0%), as well as food, alcohol & tobacco (2.3%).  (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau)
