07/11/2017 (Agence Europe) – The EU took a step forward on Monday 6 November to take account of the political agreement found at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) on a Carbon Reduction and Offsetting Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) aiming to address the sector's CO² emissions. It was by a large majority (40 votes for, one against with two abstentions) that the European Parliament's environment committee approved the provisional inter-institutional agreement that the Parliament's negotiators and the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU had reached on 18 October on prolonging the EU Emission Trading System (ETS) exemption for long-haul flights until 31 December 2023 (see EUROPE 11887). The Parliament will cast its vote during its plenary session of 11-14 December and then the Council's final agreement will be given without debate, also in December, to avoid any legal gap. (AN)
