On Tuesday 7 November, the main European electricity companies met in Dublin to launch the EU SysFlex initiative on research into the integration of renewable electricity grids.
Led by Ireland’s electricity grid operator EirGrid and coordinated on a technical level by French group EDF, SysFlex runs until 2021 and has €20 million in EU funding under the Horizon 2020 programme. It involves 34 organisations from 15 European countries and includes electricity transmission system operators, distribution system operators, technology providers, manufacturers, universities and research centres.
The aim of the project is to create a long-term roadmap for the large-scale integration of renewable energy on electricity grids as well as providing practical assistance to power system operators across Europe.
The project team will also identify improvements to European market design, regulation, operational practices and enhanced system tools. (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
