In the wake of two further attacks on mosques in Kabul and Ghor which have left at least 59 people dead and many more injured, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) called on Friday 20 October for action for peace.
“The time for action for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process is now”, the EEAS spokesperson said in a press release. “Peace in Afghanistan would benefit not only its people, but Afghanistan’s neighbours, the wider region, and the international community at large”, the spokesperson argued.
The numerous attacks, she emphasised, “do nothing to dampen our collective resolve to bring peace, stability and prosperity” to the country. “We will continue to work for the people of the country, and in doing so will remain united in fighting what is a global threat of terrorism”, she stated, adding that the EU “is and will stay a partner for peace and stability”.
Since publication of the EEAS press release, a further attack cost the lives of at least 15 Afghan military cadets on Saturday 21 October. Since 17 October, Afghanistan has suffered at least eight attacks which have claimed over 200 lives. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
