12/10/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 12 October, the European Commission approved the prolongation of a Danish scheme to encourage the shift of freight transport from road to rail. The aid takes the form of an environmental subsidy granted to operators that shift their freight transport from road to rail. The aid scheme has a budget of €7.5 million for the 2018-2025 period. The Commission considered that the scheme compensated the rail charges transporters must pay to use rail transport, which are not applicable to road transporters. The Commission also considered that the scheme favoured clean transport without creating distortions of competition on the single market, and it thus concluded that the scheme is compatible with EU state aid rules.
