11/10/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 11 October, the European Commission decided to second the Director General of the European Union's anti-fraud office (OLAF), Giovanni Kessler, to the Italian Customs and Monopoly Agency, following a request by the Italian government and in the “interests of the service”. Kessler, who was involved in a telephone tapping case in 2016, had a part to play in the controversial departure of former European Commissioner for Health, John Dalli (see EUROPE 11532). In line with a Commission decision of 13 July 2005, Nicolas Ilett will take over the helm of OLAF in the meantime, starting on 16 October and until a new Director General is appointed, most likely in early 2018. Ilett has been working for OLAF since 2002 and heads up several departments. He has previously held the position of interim Director General, in 2010. (MF)
