On Thursday 14 September, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker spoke out against the situation in Rakhine State, Burma/Myanmar.
"What is happening is a catastrophe", he said during an interview. In Juncker's view, the situation is "shocking since, once again, they are trying to eradicate whole ethnicities".
"The EU is in the process of seeing how it can help with the Burmese government and the neighbouring countries. Europe cannot not show an interest in the fate" of the Rohingyas, he said. "This is a fate and a treatment that raises our concerns", he added.
Although he stated that the EU could help the NGOs that assist the Rohingya on the ground, and could activate the UN to condemn those who are at the origin of the wrongdoing, Juncker recognised that "the possibilities of the EU" were "quite limited".
Asked about Aung San Suu Kyi's criticism of the media coverage of the situation in her country as "misinformation", Juncker said he wondered about the impact of these words. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
