Mogherini says Europeans open to possible targeted sanctions

On Friday 8 September, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said in Tallinn that the European foreign affairs ministers seemed open to possible sanctions against Venezuela.

"There are a few indications about the possibility of discussing, of introducing targeted measures.  A debate could begin in the coming days between the member states", she said at the end of the informal 'Gymnich' meeting, during which the Venezuelan political crisis was discussed.  "However, for the moment, the emphasis in mainly on political and diplomatic activities, in full coordination with the member states", she added.

On Wednesday, European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said he would not take part in the EU-Latin America and Caribbean summit in San Salvador on 26-27 October, and thus brought his backing to the foreign ministers of around 12 Latin American countries who are calling for the summit to be postponed as a sign of protest about the situation in Venezuela.

The Venezuelan crisis will be discussed again at the European Parliament plenary session on Tuesday 12 September (see other article).  (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant with Mathieu Bion)
