On Friday 8 September, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini announced in Tallinn that the European Union would carry out a review of its engagement in the Palestinian territories, in order to contribute better to the objective of a two-state solution.
"We have (...) decided to start in the European Union a review, together with the European Commission, of all the modalities of our engagement on the ground to make sure that we are using all our instruments in the best possible way, in the most effective way", she said at the end of the informal Gymnich meeting of European foreign affairs ministers in Tallinn.
In Mogherini's view, such an exercise does not mean the level of European engagement will be reduced, nor will there be a change in the engagement itself. "The purpose of this review (...) will be exactly to make sure that all the modalities of our engagement will be as efficient and as effective as they can be to reach the goal of the two-state solution", she said, adding: "we will review all the projects, all the priorities, all the ways in which we are determining our contributions and our presence, in particular in financial terms, in the Middle East and related to the Middle East peace process", Mogherini stated.
