05/09/2017 (Agence Europe) – Following the visit to Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of a Venezuelan opposition delegation including the speaker of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Julio Borges, the Spanish government said on Tuesday 5 September that it favoured the adoption at European level of "individual and selective" sanctions against the Venezuelan authorities responsible for the political crackdown in Venezuela. The delegation met France's President Emmanuel Macron in Paris the previous day, who had described the existing power as a "dictatorship". "With no positive signal from the (Venezuelan) government on this, France (is) ready to start considering at European level the adoption of measures targeting those responsible for this situation", the Élysée Palace said in a press release on Monday. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to host the Venezuelan opposition delegation on Wednesday. (MB)
