05/09/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 5 September, the European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Pierre Moscovici held a press briefing (see other articles) and provided assurances that, “We will pull out all the stops and do all we can within the context of the treaties” to ensure respect for the rule of law in the European Union. The Commission is examining the arguments provided by the Polish authorities in response to its recommendations on the on-going legal reforms in Poland (see EUROPE 1185) but admitted that it “cannot do everything” and it will be up to the Council to make decisions (that can include sanctions, Ed). The Commissioner argued, however, that an attitude that could “contaminate” the discussions on reform of the posted workers dossier, which Warsaw is opposing, would be to “compromise” on a question of the rule of law.
