20/07/2017 (Agence Europe) – In a press release published on Tuesday 18 July, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) called for United Kingdom and European Union to reach a comprehensive agreement on road transport in an effort to avoid “chaos” in the sector. The IRU argued that road transport is the driving force of the European economy and highlighted the interdependency between the British and European markets. The organisation also identifies several areas where problems could arise in the future if there is no agreement. The IRU states that customs procedures and taxes, as well as border passage infrastructure, mutual recognition of vehicle documents and driver training effectively constitute the key points of the negotiations between the two parties. The United Kingdom and European Union should therefore ensure that these issues are resolved before the British affectively leave the EU. (LT)
