On Thursday 20 July, the European Commission announced that is had released a further €10 million in emergency humanitarian aid for vulnerable populations in Libya.
The growing needs of the civilian populations that have fallen victim to the violence and instability in Libya justify this increased humanitarian effort. Together with this additional aid of €10 million, the EU's humanitarian aid amounts to €30 million since the start of the crisis.
This additional funding will enable the Commission's partner organisations on the ground in Libya to finance basic humanitarian needs, including access to emergency health care and essential medicines as the health system in Libya has collapsed.
Stating that the humanitarian situation in the country is "worrying", European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Christos Stylianides urges "all parties to the conflict to ensure immediate, safe and unrestricted humanitarian access so all in need receive lifesaving assistance".
Around 1.3 million people, or a fifth of the population, is dependent on humanitarian aid, the Commission states. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
