EU and Japan call for further sanctions against Pyongyang

In a joint statement published at the end of their summit, the presidents of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, along with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for further measures against North Korea as the country is multiplying its ballistic missile tests in breach of numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions – the latest test being on 4 July.

Tusk, Juncker and Abe called for "the early adoption of a new and comprehensive UN Security Council Resolution".  The USA, supported by France, is due to table a new draft resolution in the coming days, which establishes new sanctions against Pyongyang – but Russia has announced it would oppose any new measures.

"We have agreed to call on the international community to strengthen measures aiming to further restrict the transfer of articles and technology, but also of finance, to North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes", Tusk told press.

The three leaders share the view that "North Korea, a top priority on the international agenda, increasingly poses a new level of threat to international peace and security" and that the international community must therefore redouble its efforts to ensure the full and sustainable implementation of the UNSC resolutions.

The leaders also call on Pyongyang to refrain from any more provocations that further increase regional and international tensions.  (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
