EUROPEAN COUNCIL / Single market

28 EU member states reiterate their call for single market to be deepened

The heads of state and government of the European Union will very probably speak in favour of deepening the single market, especially in the digital domain, when they meet at the EU summit on 22 and 23 June.

According to the draft conclusions of 19 June, which have been seen by EUROPE, the European leaders are expected to highlight that further efforts are needed to accomplish the sectoral strategies on deepening the single market and thus to respect the commitments taken in June 2016.  The leaders will again focus on making progress in this area for June 2018.

The 28 EU member states are also expected to address the digital economy, ahead of the digital summit that will take place in Tallinn on 29 September as part of the Estonian Presidency of the EU Council.  The draft conclusions speak of the need to adopt a "holistic approach" on this issue so as to maximise the opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution.

The heads of state and government will also approve the socio-economic country-by-country recommendations of the Commission (see EUROPE 11793) following their approval by the Ecofin Council on 16 June (see EUROPE 11810).  These recommendations will be formally adopted at the Ecofin Council on 11 July.

In addition, the European leaders will call for a swift and definitive agreement on broadening the Juncker Plan on investment.  The plan is currently the subject of intensive inter-institutional negotiations (see EUROPE 11812). (Original version in French by Lucas Tripoteau with the editorial team)
