20/06/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 20 June, the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, gave her support to the ideas put forward by the French President, Emmanuel Macron, to deepen Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), such as the creation of a budgetary capacity for the Eurozone and a position of Eurozone finance minister. “We can consider a budget for the Eurozone, it is clear that we are reinforcing the economy”, and a finance minister, “if the conditions are met”, she said at a conference arranged by the Federation of German Industries. Before committing to these reforms, which would require treaty change, Germany would have to be satisfied that the financial and budgetary risks would be under control. Franco-German proposals on the deepening of the Eurozone are expected for Thursday 13 July (see EUROPE 11810). (MB)
