16/06/2017 (Agence Europe) – The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EuroMed Rights) “condemns the arbitrary arrests” that have taken place in the (disadvantaged) region of the Moroccan Rif, which has been marked by popular protest since 28 October 2016 further to the death of a fish seller, Mouhcine Fikri, who was crushed by a refuse collection truck. The arrests, states a EuroMed Rights press release on Friday 16 June, are “in total violation of Moroccan law and the Kingdom’s international obligations”. It regrets the “response of the authorities, (which chose) a crackdown”. An appeal has been made for “responsible and transparent dialogue in order to address the crisis as soon as possible”. EuroMed Rights also calls for there to be an “impartial and independent inquiry to shed light on the events”. The human rights network “applauds the mediation efforts made by civil society on the spot”. (FB)
