EU adopts further sanctions

On Thursday 6 April, the Council of the EU adopted, by written procedure, further restrictive measures against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), North Korea, due to the country's multiple violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions, in connection with the DPRK's nuclear programmes, ballistic missiles or other weapons of mass destruction.

The EU has thus decided to extend the ban on investing in the DPRK to new sectors – the classic weapons industry, metallurgy and the metal industry, and aerospace.  The provision, for people and entities in the DPRK, of IT services and services linked to mining and chemical industry manufacturing, and refining is also now prohibited.

The Council has also decided to add four people to the list of persons targeted by the EU's restrictive measures, because these people are considered responsible for supporting and promoting Pyongyang's programmes on nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles or other weapons of mass destruction.   This brings the total number of people subject to an EU travel ban or assets freeze to 41.  Seven entities are also subject to an assets freeze.

The legal acts linked to these decisions will be published in the Official Journal on 7 April 2017.  (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
