09/03/2017 (Agence Europe) – During International Women's Day on Wednesday 8 March, the Commissioner for Research, Carlos Moedas and Vice-President of the European Parliament, Mairead McGuinness, announced the four winners of the 2017 Horizon 2020-funded EU Prize for Women Innovators. The 1st Prize (€100,000) was awarded to Michela Magas, founder of Stromatolite, a UK Design Innovation Lab working in the area of incubation and creative technology toolkits. The 2nd Prize (€50,000) went to Petra Wadström (Solvatten company), which produced a portable water purifier and water heater powered by solar energy. 3rd Prize (€30,000) went to Claudia Gärtner, founder of microfluidic ChipShop, which provides “lab-on-a-chip” systems as miniaturised solutions for better diagnostics. For the first time, the Rising Innovators Award was also awarded, which is worth €20,000 and went to Kristina Tsvetanova, who produced the first iPad for the visually impaired, the BLITAB. (JK)
