Tajani commits to sanctioning MEP Janusz Korwin-Mikke

09/03/2017 (Agence Europe)On the sidelines of the European summit on Thursday 9 March, the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, announced his intention of sanctioning Poland's Janusz Korwin-Mikke (unaffiliated) following the misogynist comments the latter made at the most recent plenary session (see EUROPE 11737). At the opening of the session in Strasbourg on Monday 13 March, Tajani is expected to announce the nature of these sanctions. Following this announcement to the conference of the Presidents, the S&D group in Parliament welcomed the move: “it is important that the members [of the parliament] who make such outrageous comments in breach of the fundamental principles of the European Union are subjected to exemplary sanctions. They have to know that their behaviour will not go unpunished”, said the chair of the committee on women's rights, Iratxe Garcia Pérez (S&D, Spain) (our translation). (SPj)
