28/02/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 28 February, the European General Court said that it does not have the jurisdiction to rule in combined cases T-192/16, T-193/16 and T-257/16) on conformity of the agreement reached in March 2016 between the EU member states and the Turkish government to deal with the refugee crisis (see EUROPE 11515). In the ruling, the General Court refused to consider an appeal lodged by a number of asylum-seekers challenging the legality of the agreement. The General Court says in effect that neither the European Council nor any other EU institution decided to sign an agreement with the Turkish government as it was the heads of state of the member states who decided on their own behalf as players under international law to initial the agreement, which took the form of a simple press release entitled ‘EU-Turkey statement.’ (JK)
