Moldovan president wants association agreement with EU annulled

17/01/2017 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 17 January, Moldova's pro-Russian president, Igor Dodon, said he was in favour of the association agreement with the EU being annulled, in order to be able to re-establish economic relations with Russia.   He does "not rule out the annulment of this agreement after the upcoming parliamentary elections [planned for end of 2018]" if his party obtains a majority, he said after a visit to Moscow.  In his view, "this agreement has not brought any advantage to Moldova".  "We have lost the Russian market and the volume of our exports to the EU has also gone down", he said.  Dodon announced that he would visit Brussels in early February in order to discuss how to move closer to Moscow in the framework of the existing agreements.  He would like Chisinau to be given observer status in the Eurasian Economic Union.  (CG)
