17/01/2017 (Agence Europe) – The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU could create a gap of €10 billion a year in the European budget, according to the institute Notre Europe (Jacques Delors). This estimate is included in a document entitled 'Brexit and the EU Budget: Threat or Opportunity?', which was published on Monday 16 January, the day before the speech of the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, announcing that the United Kingdom will no longer contribute to the European budget once it has left the Union (see other article). In order to plug this gap, the member states of the EU may increase their contributions (Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and, to a lesser extent, France, would be the most affected), reduce expenditure (Hungary, Greece and most of the central European member states would suffer the most from this), or a combination of the two. Another option is to create new own resources to feed into the EU budget, as suggested by the high-level group on own resources (see EUROPE 11702).
