EU urges President Yahya Jammeh to accept election result

12/12/2016 (Agence Europe)On Saturday 10 December, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, called on the president of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh (51 years old), to accept the result of the 1 December presidential elections.  A week after recognising the victory of opponent Adama Barrow (51 years old), President Jammeh – who has been in power for more than 25 years – rejected the results and is calling for new elections.  Mogherini and Mimica describe the situation as ‘unacceptable’ and violating the country’s constitution.  ‘The European Union strongly urges President Jammeh to fully respect the rule of law and will of the Gambian people as expressed on Election Day, to stand by his earlier acceptance of the results and allow a peaceful transfer of power’ as ‘Any attempt to reverse carries the risk of serious consequences.’ (TR)
