30/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – According to a report adopted by the European Commission on Tuesday 29 November, implementation of the directive on the cross-border information exchange on road safety offences, has helped to increase the number of investigations into certain offences (speeding, going through a red light, not using a safety belt and driving whilst intoxicated) committed by around 2 million non-residents between 2013 and 2015 among the member states that have transposed the legislation. So far, the Commission points out that 23 member states out of 28 have implemented the directive (United Kingdom, Denmark and Ireland have a derogation and an additional deadline of up to May 2017). According to the Commission, the investigation shows that the electronic information exchange system is bearing fruit but is still underused. The Commission regretted that “In 2015, approximately half of the detected road traffic offences committed by non-residents were not investigated”. (PH)
