30/11/2016 (Agence Europe) – The European Union will again increase its contribution to the humanitarian budget for children’s education in crisis situations. The humanitarian budget currently stands at 4% and will be increased to 6% in 2017 (see EUROPE 11525). The Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides, announced this news on Wednesday 30 November during the Education in Emergencies Forum organised by ECHO in Brussels. This aid will fund children’s access to formal and non-formal education, recreational activities and psychosocial support. Children will also benefit from the provision of school material and the setting up of new education facilities. Teachers and parents will also be supported and benefit from training. There are 75 million children who are refugees, displaced or living in countries in conflict who are denied access to quality education. The EU has already allocated more than €92 million to education projects that have benefited around 3.8 million children in 47 countries. (AN)
