21/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – As part of Mobility Week (see EUROPE 11626), Wednesday 21 September was the very first European Day Without A Road Death – EDWARD. The initiative was launched by the European traffic police network (TISPOL) with the support of the European Commission. On Wednesday, Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc re-asserted the Commission’s aim of no deaths on EU roads before stating current figures: every day 70 drivers are killed and 370 seriously injured. Road death figures have remained virtually unchanged for three years despite the target set by the European Commission of reducing deaths by 50% by 2020 (see EUROPE 11522). Between now and the end of the year, the Commission is planning to present a blueprint for the deployment of cooperative intelligent transport systems (ITS) to provide better communication between vehicles and infrastructure and so reduce the death toll on Europe’s roads.
