Cities debate initiatives to improve workers' skills

21/09/2016 (Agence Europe)Mayors, politicians and representatives of organisations involved with urban policy met at an event organised by Eurocities in Rotterdam on Wednesday 21 September to discuss possible action to improve the skills of workers in order to meet the needs of the labour market, within the framework of the new skills agenda (see EUROPE 11596).  In a statement adopted last year, Eurocities stressed the role to be played by cities in best tailoring training to suit local needs and called for a stronger partnership to be set up between cities, national governments and European institutions.  This call has since been recognised in the urban agenda of May of this year (see EUROPE 11552).  The partnership for jobs and skills is likely to be approved on 4 October and put into effect from the start of 2017.  (PH)
