12/09/2016 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 12 September, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini said that she was confident that the inhabitants of the municipalities whose mayors were suspended on 11 September would "soon" be able to elect new mayors according to Turkish laws. A total of 28 mayors were suspended for suspected links with Fethullah Gülen, and four of them for being sympathisers of the PKK. The others were the elected representatives in the south east of the country. Trustees have been appointed to replace the suspended mayors. When she arrived at the informal Development Council, Mogherini explained that all measures taken should comply with the rule of law. She also stated that the EU recognised the PKK as a terrorist organisation. (CG)
