The president of the Tunisian assembly of people’s representatives, Mohamed Ennaceur, sent a letter on 31 August to his counterpart at the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, expressing approval in advance of the special resolution to be submitted on 12 September to the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg.
Ennaceur expresses approval of the draft resolution drawn up at the end of July 2016 by the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, in which it calls for efforts to be intensified with Tunisia, whose economic situation is of grave concern given the severely disrupted security situation in the region.
In the letter, Ennaceur stresses the hope in the resolution for the Tunisian debt to Europe (the EU and its member states) to be ‘converted.’ The committee says it is concerned about the weight of the Tunisian debt and recommends its conversion into investment projects, particularly in strategic construction and infrastructure, and reducing regional inequality. Welcoming moves in this direction by a number of member states, he suggests re-scheduling Tunisia’s debt under preferential conditions and diversifying the debt’s components.
