18/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU to send team to observe general election on 11 August. At the request of the Zambian authorities, the EU will observe the presidential, parliamentary, mayoral and council chairpersons, and local government elections scheduled to be held in Zambia on 11 August. “I trust that these forthcoming elections will be transparent and peaceful”, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini in a press release published on Friday 15 July. The electoral observation mission (EOM) will be led by MEP Cecile Kashetu Kyenge (S&D, Italy). The core team arrived in Zambia on 29 June. It was joined on 11 July by 24 long-term observers and, on 5 August, 56 additional short-term observers will be deployed across the country. This is the fourth time that the European Union has observed elections in Zambia, a country with a “track record for well-run elections”, Mogherini stated. (AN)
