Sanctions for truck cartel to be announced this week

Brussels, 18/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is reported to be getting ready to hand down sanctions to an illegal cartel concluded between a number of manufacturers of heavy- and medium-duty goods vehicles, this Wednesday 20 July, according to the Financial Times of Sunday 17 July.

Again according to the FT, four of the six companies concerned (MAN, Volvo/Renault, DAF, Iveco, Scania and Daimler) are believed to have set €2.85 billion aside as a provision ahead of the Commission's decision. MAN will escape the fine as it blew the whistle on the existence of the cartel. It is not clear whether Scania is prepared to settle the matter through a transaction, according to the newspaper.

In November 2014, the Commission notified its objections to the companies, specifically that it suspected them of having agreed on prices and coordinated their pricing practices in the European Economic Area between 1997 and 2011 (EUROPE 11201). (Original version in French by Elodie Lamer)
