18/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - Regulation to reduce air pollution from non-road combustion engines adopted. The EU now has a new regulation to tackle air pollution caused by lawn mowers, crawler excavators and tractors, locomotives and inland waterway vessels, as well as other engines of non-road mobile machinery (EMNR). On Monday 18 July, the Council of the EU proceeded, without debate, to the formal adoption of the updated European regulation to reduce the pollution from this kind of equipment, which is responsible for 15% of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and 5% emissions of fine dust particles in the EU (EUROPE 11588). The inter-institutional agreement reached in a first reading on 6 April last on the reduction of polluting emissions and the updating and simplification of the EU type approval system for internal combustion engines for these EMNR was endorsed by the European Parliament on 5 July and helped facilitate this progress (EUROPE 11587).
