€73 million for resilience and youth employment in Somalia

Brussels, 16/06/2016 (Agence Europe) - Somalia will be able to count on €73 million of aid under new projects endorsed by the EU under the eleventh European development fund (EDF). EU Commissioner for Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica made the announcement on Thursday at a meeting with Mohamed Omer Arteh, Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia, on the fringes of the European Development Days (see EUROPE 11572).

The money is will be used to help the most vulnerable sections of the population, including internally displaced persons.

Some €25 million will go towards building resilience and enhancing youth employment for rural communities and urban households in Somalia. A further €48 million will be provided for state-building and peace-building actions to strengthen core state functions, the rule of law, security (including support to police salaries) and the public finance management system.
