24/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - Madrid says EU cannot remain indifferent to Venezuelan political crisis. During the Foreign Affairs Council on Monday (EUROPE 11549), the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel García-Margallo, said that this issue is of "major concern" to his government and called on the European Union to get involved in finding a "solution to the humanitarian and political crisis" currently gripping Venezuela. When he arrived in Brussels, the Foreign Minister said that he approved the holding of a referendum in 2016 as called for in a petition obtaining mass support and launched by the majority opposition at the National Parliament, which could result in forcing President Maduro from office. According to Mr García-Margallo, all constitutional alternatives are legitimate, "including the organisation of a referendum recalling the president from office". (MB)
