Brussels, 24/05/2016 (Agence Europe) - In adopting the report by Barbara Kappel (ENF, Austria) by 41 votes to 6, with 3 abstentions on Tuesday 24 May, the European Parliament's energy committee gave strong support to the Commission's legislative proposal making compulsory the collection of statistical data on households' energy consumption and gathering data that allows comparison among member states from one year to another. Hitherto, collection has been voluntary.
Currently, only statistical data on prices charged to industrial consumers are gathered by the member states.
Statistical data on electricity and gas prices are needed for monitoring the internal market for energy and the impact of various policies in the area of energy, such as support for renewable energy sources.
In the context of energy union, the Commission has promised to deliver a report on energy costs every two years, beginning in 2016. (Original version in French by Emmanuel Hagry)
