29/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - MEPs show caution with new FIFA president. The European Parliament's sport intergroup gave a guarded welcome to the election of Gianni Infantino of the head of football's world governing body, FIFA, on Friday 26 February. “Only once the promises on transparency, good governance and ethics have finally been kept will we be able to applaud Mr Infantino's appointment. To do so today would be to descend into the political correctness that for so long kept Sepp Blatter in power”, said Marc Tarabella, joint chair of the intergroup. The new FIFA president, who has held the post of Secretary General of UEFA since 2009, was elected with the support of the European football associations to succeed Blatter, who was disgraced after information on questionable payments surfaced. Following his election, Infantino stated: “We will restore the image of FIFA and everyone will respect FIFA and everyone will applaud us”. (SPj)
