EU gives assurances and clarification after activities frozen

Brussels, 29/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with Morocco's main online newspaper Yabiladi on Sunday 28 February, the EU's ambassador in Rabat, Rupert Joy, provided reassurance of the EU's interest in maintaining relations with Morocco, despite the decision announced by Rabat to freeze contacts with the EU following a ruling of the EU General Court regarding the Western Sahara (see EUROPE 11500). “There is the separation of powers in our system”, Joy stated.

“We completely agree with Morocco that partnership demands listening, sharing, solidarity and mutual respect. We believe the EU's response has been exemplary since the decision of the court on 10 December”. Joy stated that on 14 December the EU Council had been “unanimous” in wanting to appeal this court ruling. “And let's not forget the work of the services concerned for two months to prepare the appeal. During this period, Morocco was kept informed of the procedure in the framework of the legal constraints that apply”, he said. However, he went on: “What is clear is that Morocco does not share this point of view. What is now important is to give all the assurance and clarification needed.”

Asked about what would ensue if the General Court's ruling was upheld, Joy replied: “If this happens, we will move on to a different situation. But I don't want to speculate on hypothetical situations. As partners, we should overcome the obstacles together.” Our relationship with Morocco is “a partnership that is important for us. We have been partners for a very long time. As it turns out, this coincides with the 20th anniversary of signing the association agreement”. And, he assured, “there is strong determination in Brussels to find a solution to this crisis”. (Original version in French by Fathi B'Chir)
