16/02/2016 (Agence Europe) - EU extends sanctions by one year. On the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday 15 February, the Council of the EU decided without debate that the last targeted sanctions applied by the EU to Zimbabwe - those hitting Zimbabwe's President Mugabe, his wife and the country's defence industry - along with the arms embargo will be extended by one year until 20 February 2017. The Council's decision comes as part of the periodical reassessment of sanctions. The sanctions were eased significantly on 19 February 2014 following the 2013 elections which were generally conducted peacefully (see EUROPE 11022). The 78 people and 8 entities whose sanctions were suspended will be removed from the list. The Council's decision will be published in the Official Journal of the EU on Wednesday 17 February. (AN)
